Summary of the election programme 2022-2026
On March 16th, we will choose the city council of our beautiful city Haarlem. There is a lot at stake! Haarlem is in many ways a beautiful city. At the same time, we are faced with major challenges, and can only resolve these challenges together.
- We fight for a right to affordable housing
We work day in day out for a fair city for everyone, but more is needed. That is why we are increasing the building ambition by 2,000 homes by 2030. In total, we want to provide at least 10,000 new homes within the next eight years, including at least 5,000 social homes provided by housing associations and 4,000 rental and owner-occupied homes in the middle segment. We will do everything in our power to increase our grip on the failing housing market, for example through purchase protection and a permit requirement for landlords, to further aid and support tenants.
- We must act NOW to be a climate neutral city by 2050!
We need radical and realistic goals to become a climate neutral city by 2050. Under the leadership of Frans Timmermans (the vice president of the European Commission and member of the PvdA), a European Green Deal was struck that helps member states to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. This goal must be achieved in Haarlem as well. With a proactive approach, we will insulate 10,000 homes and connect 5,000 homes to sustainable heat sources in the next four years. Subsequently we make our economy green and establish climate deals with companies in Haarlem.
- We close the opportunity gap
Whether you grow up in Meerwijk or in Koninginnebuurt, whether you have poor or rich parents, it should never determine who you become when you grow up. That is why we invest in children, schools and neighborhoods that need more support.
- We will ensure that by 2030 no child in Haarlem will grow up in poverty;
- We will triple the budget to combat inequality of opportunity through education and we will draw up a master plan for building and maintaining schools with room for additional investments.
- Investing in equal opportunities goes hand in hand with even better education in Haarlem.
- We end social inequality and get everyone involved
The highest income groups in our country on average live seven years longer and have eighteen more healthy life years than the lowest income groups. The City of Haarlem can and must give a boost to ensure social equality by doing much more in terms of prevention. We are therefore concluding an ambitious city-wide prevention dealand we will invest in a solid social base for everyone. Participation starts with being able to participate. We will continue to successfully guide Haarlemmers within vulnerable positions to help secure jobs or education. People who work for low wages also deserve support. We will therefore support residents of Haarlem with an income of up to 130% of the statutory social minimum. We invest in social equality for all Haarlem residents, because everyone benefits from it. It reduces mutual distrust, physical and psychological health problems, and crime.
- We are decisive and realistic
confidence is needed to make our plans come true. We are a party of thinkers, but we are ‘doers’ too. We do not observe from the sidelines but ensure that we achieve the maximum result with every vote. In order to materialize our plans, we must invest. If we don’t and progress as we are it could make for more unhappy residents. And if we choose to continue on the current path we would get the bill anyway: due to higher healthcare costs, higher shelter costs for homeless residents of Haarlem, higher social assistance costs and higher sustainability investments in the near future.
- Our election programme was written together with inhabitants of our city
In order to find the best points of view and ideas for Haarlem, we entered into discussions with concerned Haarlem residents and experts. We did this in all kinds of ways, such as through meetings, letterbox campaigns, neighborhood discussions, expert sessions and a survey in which 370 Haarlem residents took part. This way everyone could contribute ideas for the election programme. It resulted in a programme full of social ideas that connects Haarlem residents.
With your vote we can work together on an even better Haarlem!
